CHAPTER 24

JUNIPER

October 13, After Midnight

Prague

Alchemist’s Row Apothecary

Juniper sprinted from the Danse Macabre with Tom Constantine and Kent McGregor down a dark hallway. She wished for her pistol. The horrors from the dance could spill into the street at any second.

Two alchemists in togas, lost in easy chuckles and chatter, strolled toward them. One stopped her to ask, “We’ve come from dinner. How is the masquerade?”

“They’re dying in the music hall and not from fun,” she said, pushing past him. Tom and Mr. McGregor covered her flank as they trotted to the apothecary at the end of the hall. The lights were on when they entered.

The younger Bard smiled in relief, as if he’d expected worse. “I can hear our carriage bells outside.”

“Run,” Kent cried out from behind them, then sprinted like a man being chased.

Juniper darted down an aisle of clay jars that glittered with power. The front door was tantalizingly ahead of her. A man in Jesuit robes stepped inside. She darted around a cluster of divine statuary to reach him. Her skirt caught on the triton of a marble Neptune.

Tom bent to release the fabric and braced the wobbling statue.

“Thanks,” she said as she jogged with him. A buzz zipped by her ear. She swiped at the sound, expecting a beetle.

A gold hummingbird zoomed at her face. Vapor puffed from its metal beak. She fell backward, unconscious, before she hit the floor.
